Christianization of Colosseum in the project of Carlo Fontana for Innocent XI
Sixtus V was the first Pope to attempt to reconvert and christianize the Coliseum. To mark the Jubilee of 1675, Pope Clement X had two engravings erected in which he counselled pilgrims to enter the building not to admire the grandeur of the Roman monument but to “reawaken in the faithful a memory of the sanctity of the place and the strength of martyrs”, and to pray for them. Between 1675 and 1679, Carlo Fontana designed a church – a veritable martyrs’ sanctuary – for construction inside the arena. He presented the design to newly-elected Pope Innocent X, but it was never built. Fontana’s blueprint for the Coliseum was only printed posthumously in the Hague in 1725.

In the Holy Year of 1675, the Arciconfraternita del Santissimo Crocifisso di San Marcello greeted and accommodated close to thirty different companies. Even more detail comes from Abbot Caetano of the Arciconfraternita della morte e orazione, which greeted around five thousand people from twenty-one different companies, in exchange receiving more than 1300 escudos in alms.

In Holy year 1675 the Archconfraternity of the Holy Stigmata received a little more than 300 people belonging to five aggregated companies. It got as a donation several gifts of worth.

During the Jubilee of 1675, the Company of Suffrage housed only six companies and was given in return about 550 scudos as a donation.

"De origine et progressu celebritatis anni iubilei" by Francesco Maria Febei
In 1675, The Archbishop of Tarso, Francesco Maria Febei, the first pontifical master of ceremonies, wrote “Ad instruendum animum imminente anno iubilei”, an erudite Latin treatise on the origin, history and rites of the Holy Year, in a lavish illustrated publication dedicated to Pope Clement X and conceived for an educated and refined readership.
