Extraordinary Jubilee functions and processions

The extraordinary jubilees described by Gaetano Moroni (1802-1883), author of the most famous Dizionario di erudizione storico-ecclesiastica, were proclaimed by pontiffs from the sixteenth century onwards for special occasions, at difficult times, or to celebrate the beginning of a pontificate. They lasted varying lengths of time and were often only local in scope (more than seventy of them were held). Between 1933 and 1983, and again in 2016, there have been a number of extraordinary jubilees whose duration, scope and ceremony are identical to ordinary universal jubilees, qualifying them as true Holy Years

Sixtus V, elected Pope in 1585, was the first pontiff to proclaim a Jubilee to mark the start of his pontificate

Tempesti tells of Sixtus V’s decision to begin his pontificate by proclaiming “a broad plenary indulgence in the form of a Jubilee; ...a usage never before practised by any of his predecessors”

Casimiro Liborio Tempesti, Storia della vita e geste di Sisto quinto sommo pontefice..., vol. I, Roma 1754

Extraordinary Jubilee at the start of Alexander VII’s papacy (1655)

Alexander VII, who was Pope from 1655 to 1667, never celebrated an ordinary universal Jubilee; he did, however, celebrate five extraordinary jubilees to mark special occasions. Adopting the practice begun by Sixtus V, this included a Jubilee at the start of his pontificate, as depicted in this engraving. Note that the iconographic representation here is inaccurate, given that for this type of Jubilee the ceremony used for Holy Years was never adopted, and the door was not opened (as shown in the second frame from the top, on the left)

Bull of indiction for Benedict XIV’s Extraordinary Jubilee for Peace between Christian Princes (1744)

As well as at the start of their pontificates, pontiffs have also proclaimed extraordinary jubilees (without the characteristics of a Holy Year) for special occasions or at times of great difficulty. In 1744, in the midst of the Austrian War of Succession, during which Austrian and Spanish armies skirmished on papal territories, Benedict XIV proclaimed a Jubilee to foster peace between Christian princes

Pius XI’s Holy Years

Pius XI celebrated two Holy Years: an ordinary one in 1925, and an extraordinary one in 1933 to celebrate the 1900th anniversary of the Redemption. The Jubilee of 1933 was the first Extraordinary Jubilee to be celebrated adopting every aspect of Ordinary Jubilee ceremony, including the ritual of the Holy Door, hence its inclusion as a true Holy Year. It was also the first Holy Year to be celebrated after the Lateran Accords and the Concordat between Italy and the Holy See, which resolved the “Roman question”

1933, Extraordinary Jubilee of the Redemption

Pius XI defined the Jubilee of 1933 “Extraordinary among the Ordinary” to highlight its scope and nature compared with many short and less important extraordinary jubilees celebrated by his predecessors in previous centuries.
